AMC's chief stylist Richard A. of Teague began work on the Pacer in 1971, anticipating an increase in demand for smaller cars through the decades.
Car and Driver magazine noted that "AMC said it was the first car designed from the inside out. Four passengers were positioned at reasonable clearances and then the rest of the car is built around it as compactly as possible. "Designed to appear alfatech futuristic, the shape is well rounded with a large area of glass , and very unusual for its time. Road & Track magazine alfatech described it as "fresh, alfatech bold and functional-looking".
Development under Product Group Vice President Gerald C. Meyers, whose goal is to develop a vehicle that is truly unique: "... all things we must identify itself as important different than what might be expected from the competition ..."
Unique for a relatively small car, the Pacer is as wide as a full-size American cars of the time. Contrary to myth, it will not be widened by six inches (152.4 mm) to make room for the rear-wheel drive configuration. According to a market study by AMC since the early 1970s, the front-wheel drive is not considered, [citation needed] although the editor of Road & Track asserted that the front-wheel drive, as well as A transverse mid-engined configuration, is "different mechanical layouts ... tossed around the idea of the AMC people", adding that "it is likely alfatech that they never had much hope of being able to produce anything other than their traditional front engine alfatech and rear drive, with component production. "A rear-engined layout is also explored. alfatech 1975 AMC advertising literature proclaimed it as "the first wide small car".
The width is dictated partly by strategy.S marketing. drivers are accustomed to large vehicles, and the occupants the Pacer had the impression of being in a larger carnd partly by the fact that AMC assembly alfatech line was set up for full-size cars.
Also unique at the time, the passenger door was four inches (101 mm) longer than driving. This made passenger loading easier, particularly from the rear seat, and they also tend to use the safe side of the curb in countries which drive on the right. Ford used this element of design in the 1990s Ford Windstar minivan.
Teague low-drag design, which predated alfatech the fuel crisis and the flood of small foreign imports into the American market, is quite innovative. Its drag coefficient of 0.43 is too low for that time. Teague even eliminated rain gutters, smoothly blending the tops of the door to the roofn aerodynamic specification which, although criticized at the time for allowing rain into the front seat, has become the standard in design today.
Pacer is also the first production car in the U.S. features rack and pinion steering. The body was designed with the intention that the line structure is protected from damage hit, AMC engineers claimed that they succeeded in more than 50% of the vehicle over.
In the mid-1970s, the U.S. government mandated major safety improvements for the 1980 model year, to include the 50-mile-per-hour (80 km / h) front-end crash test, 25-mile-per- hour (40 km / h) side crash test and 30-mile-per-hour (48 km / h) the rollover test, as well as the installation of the bumpers alfatech to resist 5-mile-per-hour ( 8 km / h) impact alfatech in the front and 10 - mile-per-hour (16 km / h) at the rear. The Pacer was designed specifications, and also laminated safety glass in the windshield.
General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler alfatech persuaded the government that it is not financially viable to modify existing production cars to comply with the new regulations, and instead each company put enormous costs of producing new, safety -following vehicles. Accordingly the governments needs to be reduced, which led to the removal of some safety features from the example in the production Paceror roll bar over the passenger compartment, and the bump on the roof that accommodated it. Pacer behind the safety features alfatech are not strongly advertised, and bihir
